Weather Variability Induced Uncertainty of Contrail Radiative Forcing

چکیده
Persistent contrails and contrail cirrus are estimated to have a larger impact on climate than all CO2 emissions from global aviation since the introduction of jet engines. However, measure for this impact, effective radiative forcing (ERF) or (RF), suffers uncertainties that much those CO2. Despite ongoing research, so called level scientific understanding has not improved 1999 IPCC Special Report Aviation Global Atmosphere. In paper, role weather variability as major component uncertainty range RF is examined. Using 10 years MOZAIC flights ERA-5 reanalysis data, we show natural causes large variations in instantaneous (iRF) persistent contrails, which source uncertainty. Most (about 80%) small positive iRF up 20 W m?2. IRF exceeds m?2 about 10% cases but these disproportionally remaining negative iRF. The distribution values heavily skewed towards an exponential decay. Monte Carlo experiments reveal difficulty determining precise long-term mean measurement campaign data alone. Depending chosen sample size, calculated means scatter considerably, caused exclusively by variability. Considering many additional sources variation been deliberately neglected present examination, results suggest there fundamental limit precision with ERF can be determined. our opinion, does imply low understanding; rather grown considerably over recent decades. Only determination annual still difficult will probably coming decades, if forever. little knowledge is, therefore, no argument postpone actions mitigate contrail’s warming impact.

متن کاملImportance of representing optical depth variability for estimates of global line-shaped contrail radiative forcing.
Estimates of the global radiative forcing by line-shaped contrails differ mainly due to the large uncertainty in contrail optical depth. Most contrails are optically thin so that their radiative forcing is roughly proportional to their optical depth and increases with contrail coverage. In recent assessments, the best estimate of mean contrail radiative forcing was significantly reduced, becaus...
متن کاملSimulation of the global contrail radiative forcing: A sensitivity analysis
[1] The contrail radiative forcing induced by human aviation activity is one of the most uncertain contributions to climate forcing. An accurate estimation of global contrail radiative forcing is imperative, and the modeling approach is an effective and prominent method to investigate the sensitivity of contrail forcing to various potential factors. We use a simple offline model framework that ...
متن کاملA case study of the radiative forcing of persistent contrails evolving into contrail-induced cirrus
[1] The radiative forcing due to a distinct pattern of persistent contrails that form into contrail-induced cirrus near and over the UK is investigated in detail for a single case study during March 2009. The development of the contrail-induced cirrus is tracked using a number of high-resolution polar orbiting and lower-resolution geostationary satellite instruments and is found to persist for ...
